UNIT 8: TUTOR SUMMARY NOTES
GENERAL
The purpose of this unit is to provide some space for course members to reflect on their learning. This is of most use for those groups following the whole course. If you have tackled about half of these units, you might also find it a useful exercise to do with your group. If you have just dipped in for one or two sessions, you will probably want to skip this.
EXERCISE 1: REVIEWING THE COURSE (120 minutes)
As well as providing a chance to reflect, this review encourages people to appreciate what they have learned and also what they have each contributed. It is important that people are encouraged to voice their opinions about any of the course content - the gaps, the pace, the way the course has been designed - and that these are listened to carefully and respectfully. Constructive criticism should be welcomed as a means of improving the course.
This can be approached in two ways: either through a general discussion or by using the option of a ‘Time Line’ or an ‘H Diagram’. Whichever approach you use, you should finish off by asking participants to complete the evaluation questionnaire.
EXERCISE 2: THE ASSIGNMENT (60 minutes)
This exercise outlines what is required in relation to the assessment for Part 1. You should already have alerted participants to the 3 assessment components so it should not come as a surprise. Encourage participants to work together as much as possible particularly in the initial stages. From looking at the Learning Logs, you will also have been able to assess who is most comfortable with writing and who faces the most difficulty. Use of individual tutorials should help to pick up on any particular needs such as literacy support, submission of assignments in different formats e.g. tape, different language, etc.
EXERCISE 3: PLANS FOR PART 2 (15 minutes)
If people are progressing to Part 2 discuss necessary arrangements
