UNIT 4: TUTOR SUMMARY NOTES

GENERAL

This unit contains a lot of quite challenging material that may produce some intense debate. It is important to remind participants of the importance of respecting other people’s opinions whilst stressing that the ideas presented in this unit are absolutely central to a community development approach to health.

EXERCISE 1: RECAP FROM UNIT 3 AND INTRODUCTION TO UNIT 4 (15 minutes)

You covered a lot of material in the last unit so it is important just to remind participants of the key points.

EXERCISE 2: LIVING WITH RACISM (30 minutes)

This exercise is aimed at enabling people to see things from a different perspective (putting themselves in other people’s shoes) and as such can be quite challenging. Try to use it to highlight the problems that can occur through stereotyping and ignorance.

EXERCISE 3: DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES, COMMON PROBLEMS (75 minutes)

The aim of this exercise is to allow participants to consider the issues facing a variety of groups of people. It again will probably stimulate a lively debate!

EXERCISE 4: THE MEANING OF EQUITY IN HEALTH (30 minutes)

This exercise is aimed at exploring the idea of equity in health. Use of the ‘biscuit exercise’ can help illustrate this concept whilst at the same time introducing a bit of fun to what can be quite a ‘heavy’ session.

EXERCISE 5: FROM SOCIAL EXCLUSION TO SOCIAL JUSTICE (30 minutes)

The aim of this activity is to introduce the key concepts of social exclusion, social inclusion and social justice but relating this to a practical exercise in order to make them ‘real’ for participants.

EXERCISE 6: THE GROUP PROJECT (45 minutes [+ approx. 1 hour ‘homework’ if required])

The group should now be beginning to ‘put the meat on the bones’ of their presentation. Encourage them to draw on the ideas covered so far in the course. Also encourage them to carry out some research in their own time or get together with others in their group to work on their preparation.

EXERCISE 7: RECAP AND SUMMARY (15 minutes)

The learning log for this session is a bit more extensive. Emphasise that it isn’t a test but is purely a chance to get used to writing a bit more about what they’ve learned.

Tutors have the option of carrying out a mid-point evaluation here. If you wish to do so refer to the HIIC Evaluation Guide pp 16 to 18 to complete the mid-point evaluation. When pulling the information together to feed back to the group please refer to pages 27 and 28 of the HIIC Evaluation guide. The guide can be accessed from this website then HIIC: Tutor resources. Otherwise feel free to devise your own evaluation method.
