UNIT 11: TUTOR SUMMARY NOTES
GENERAL
This whole unit focuses on the issue of food to illustrate the underlying causes of health issues and how these can be tackled using a community development approach. If your group wishes to focus on another issue you will need to source relevant materials for some of the exercises.
EXERCISE 1: RECAP FROM UNIT 10 AND INTRODUCTION TO UNIT 11
(15 minutes)
This gives you a chance to give a brief recap of the last unit and introduce the material for this unit.
EXERCISE 2: LOOKING UPSTREAM (45 minutes)
The aim of this exercise is to get a mix of ‘individual’ reasons and ‘structural’ reasons. Try to get a good balance of both from group members. This should stimulate a ‘lively’ debate although you should try to avoid too much detail about the participants’ diets if you can!
EXERCISE 3: TAKING ACTION (90 minutes)
The aim of this exercise is to give the group a bit more time to actually work out how they would tackle an issue using a community development approach.
EXERCISE 4: COMMUNITY RESEARCH PROJECTS – SHARED LEARNING SESSION (30 minutes)
This is the opportunity for the research groups to share with each other how they’re progressing with their pieces of action research.
EXERCISE 5: RECAP AND SUMMARY (15 minutes)
It is important that there is time to recap and summarise. It also gives you the opportunity to catch up on any concerns/issues with individuals and chat to people about their learning logs.
