UNIT 3: TUTOR SUMMARY NOTES
GENERAL
This unit contains a lot of material and you may find you do not have enough time to cover the group project work. If this is the case, be sure to allocate extra time within the next unit or ask participants to do some planning on their own or in their small groups between sessions.
EXERCISE 1: RECAP FROM UNIT 2 AND INTRODUCTION TO UNIT 3 (15 minutes)
This provides an opportunity for participants to reflect on the previous unit along with any thoughts they may have had about the content of the course or the group project.
EXERCISE 2: BARRIERS AND CHOICES (30 minutes)
The aim of this exercise is to enable participants to identify barriers and obstacles to maintaining good health in their everyday lives. It provides an opportunity for participants to identify some of the choices people make in different circumstances when encountering such obstacles. It is a good, active and visual exercise that should help participants understand the topic more easily. A fair bit of space is required for this exercise so make sure the room is clear. It can be done outside if there is space (and it’s not raining!).
EXERCISE 3: FACTS, FIGURES AND PEOPLE’S STORIES (60 minutes)
The aims of this exercise are:
- To enable participants to: search for information using a variety of media, read and distil the information, feed it back to the group.
- To enable participants to: identify key factors relating to poverty and health through reading statistics, reports and books.
Advance preparation for Exercise 3 is required. The first part of this exercise has been set up as an Internet/literature search and reading activity that can take place in a local library, a learning centre or in your normal training venue. If you have good Internet access and participants in the group have the necessary skills, then it is a good idea to run it in the usual training environment. However, if this is not the case, you should ensure that you have the relevant hard copies of material for participants to use.
EXERCISE 4: DEFINING POVERTY (45 minutes)
The aim of this exercise is for participants to begin to define poverty for themselves. By looking at a variety of definitions, participants can begin to develop a broader understanding of the issue.
Other useful reference materials for this exercise are:
Feel free to use your own. Check that any website you want to refer to is current and relevant.
Although Handout D provides a generally accepted list of what most people would regard as ‘necessities’, encourage your group to add any items that they feel have been missed out; after all, they are the experts on what is important and necessary to them!
EXERCISE 5: INEQUALITIES IN HEALTH (30 minutes)
This exercise continues the poverty theme but begins to look at inequalities in a broader sense and their effect on everyone’s health; regardless of income.
In Handout E, section 1 – The Health Divide – reference is made to child death rates in Britain. Note: some participants find this fact upsetting. You will have to be prepared to explain about statistics and percentages and how they are used to produce these statements.
A useful additional reference which compares Scotland with other countries is: http://www.gov.scot/Publications/2014/03/2561/4
EXERCISE 6: THE GROUP PROJECT – SESSION 2 (30 minutes)
By this stage, the small groups should have settled on their topic and their chosen format. Encourage your group to complete their guest list at this point. Some of the practical arrangements for the Presentation rest on the size of your group’s audience. Make clear who is doing the inviting. While the ultimate responsibility is yours, some groups like to write their own invitations. Other organisations have an administrator who is willing to take on this role.
EXERCISE 7: RECAP AND SUMMARY (15 minutes)
Recap, summary and learning logs.
